Why a tattoo studio? This has much longer and weirder reason for this choice. Years ago, I attempted the first stab at this book and did lots of world building as I did it. Originally Joshua was 13, a orphan kid living on the streets and he gets taken in by 28 year old Seth and his two younger brothers (age 21 and 17) when he gets tangled up with witches creating feral werewolves...for reasons I never figured out. The 13 old version of Joshua had a friend who dated a girl called Charcoal. Her parents had a tattoo place. That story started with Charcoal asking Joshua to find her boyfriend whod disappeared. The boy been mauled by a feral wolf, killed and the witches dumped his body in the ocean. I ran into all sorts of problems with the logic and reworked the plot again and again. I pitched Seths younger brothers. I then shifted Seth to the main POV and made him 17 and Joshua 8. That solved lots of the problems and created new ones. I could never work out the kinks in the story and scrapped it. So fast forward several years and I decide I like the basic BASIC premise which was the lowest layer to the whole world, which was Joshua going from totally ignorant of there being werewolves to being the kings heir. It required me to toss EVERYTHING that Id written and reimagine it in a way that worked. When I started to try and figure out Winnies grandmother, I wanted something totally unexpected. I thought about the typical bookstore or fortune tellers place or herb shop, yadayadayada. I remember then that the girl too old to be love interest (Charcoal) could be matched up with Winnie. Thus Grannys place would be a tattoo shop.
