Why do we walk with a service dog at our side and why should they - TopicsExpress

Why do we walk with a service dog at our side and why should they be accommodated . First and foremost every person wishes to be normal regardless how you define the term. But for us normal is usually so far off the scale of the average person, we have trouble walking within society without facing terms , such as "oh she is one of them" and that short sentence is filled with disgust , sometimes even hatred. the other is trying to cope with what everyone finds so easy, the fear that fills us eventually makes it impossible to do the things we wish and coping with people and the comments make life so you step back even more. I know this as I stopped doing so many things until Kazam entered my life. Then I had the joy of rediscovering so many simple pleasures in life -- for example swimming , just going for a drive safely for myself and others (for I had stopped driving), to do gardening, walking on uneven surfaces, to have some feeling of fresh cut grass under my bare feet,--- for you see my doorways to freedom are seizure alert and mobility assist. One of the greatest joys I had was not having to crawl across an unending space, among standing people to pull myself upright. And watching people pull back and not help and once standing look and watch people stare at me and shake their heads. So for me these dogs are FREEDOM and INDEPENDENCE in the capital letters. They helped me raise my children, they gave me a life that was not dependent on on people, as people tend to vanish into thin air. So ask yourself if your spouse, family member was injured or any medical illness that created a situation that it was impossible for them to walk, move about without help. One question and it is a biggy "HOW MANY HOURS A DAY COULD YOU GIVE THAT PERSON FOR THE REST OF THEIR LIFE ad yet still work , have a family, and a life of your own. Before answering remember if it is your spouse or child, every time you come home , you will be face with the fact that they likely had needed your help many times and you were not there. Also hired help usually only does what is in the job contract. So what of the million things that happen once in a blue moon. This person can not do them or cope by themselves without help, so therefor you or they are cut off more and more. Family stops comings, friends are the quickest to stop , help is in and out, does their job and gone. What are we left with --- I know as I lived this life before Kazam. Freedom comes with four paws and a shaggy coat. It needs to go to the bathroom , needs food , water and love. But never asks for one hour off. In fact we have to make them take time off. They are for us FREEDOM, a life where there was none. Rita Lillico
