Will Construction of Stone Wall or Groynes be a solution to stop sea erosion on the Beaches! Sandy beaches along Indias Coastal line are a prominent feature. They are dynamic zones as they support marine as well as terrestrial flora, fauna and form habitats for the same. Beaches being dynamic features respond to a variety of forces both natural and man-made. They current trend of population growth and development shows that, beaches face threats in terms of pressures enforced by encouragements along the shoreline. This occurs due to a lack of a holistic understanding of the dynamics present within a shoreline ecosystem and the various life forms it support, as habitat to marine and terrestrial life. Not to forget it has been consistently supporting life and livelihood activities of coastal communities for several hundreds of years. We see that beaches face rapid erosion due to man-made structure that are built along the coastline in the name of development. The tidal regime is what forms and maintains a beach on any coast. Any activity or structure that disrupts the tidal regime and the natural course the sand flow will in time disrupt the natural process involved in the formation and maintenance of a healthy shoreline of which beaches are non-separable part. As a beach is formed in the zone in-between terrestrial future and marine and estuarine features. The beach is a feature that cannot be ignored. As it supports a variety of life forms and is an important resource in terms of supporting life and livelihood activities for the local coastal communities. The most important reason for soil erosion on the beach is human activities like building, commercial ports, harbours and digging beach sand and throwing it elsewhere. As a result, settlements are totally destroyed. The properties of coastal community like coconut and palmyrah trees and gardens are also destroyed. As there is no place for fisherman to keep their boats and nets, they have to search for some other place. Pilling up stones to prevent soil erosion on the beach is a temporary, expensive and an unnatural activity. This could never prevent sea erosion permanently. The sand on the beach is like the sand on a river bank. The moving of sand is a rare natural phenomenon. This occurs on a large scale on the beach. This movement of sand should not be obstructed; pilling of stones will not be a permanent solution to prevent soil erosion on the beach. Development of coastal forests should be encouraged to prevent soil erosion on the beach. Sand dunes on the beach should be protected. Construction near the beach should be stopped. Government should allocate funds for beach nourishment programmes and implement them with community participation.
