- A judge has found the teen who admitted to killing his foster brother thinking he was goblin not guilty by reason of insanity. Cody Metzker-Madsen has been on trial for the death of 5-year-old Dominic Elkins, during which two different psychologists testified with differing opinions on whether he knew right from wrong at the time of the August 2013 killing. Metzker-Madsen took the stand in earlier testimony admitting to the killing, but revealing he saw a fantasy world and thought he was attacking a goblin. The judge heard closing arguments Friday afternoon and said the prosecution proved beyond a reasonable doubt that he repeatedly beat Elkins in the head with a brick and shoved his head into the creek until he stopped breathing behind their foster parents home near Logan, Iowa. But the judge said the defense proved that Metzker-Madsens deranged mental condition made him incapable of knowing what hes accused of, and the difference between right and wrong. Cody Metzker-Madsen appeared to be unaffected by the gravity of his acts against Dominic. He was animated in describing his battle against the goblin. He became testy when confronted with his lies and inconsistencies. However, it is not clear he appreciates even now the consequences of his actions, Judge Kathleen Kilnoski explained. Prosecutors say the teen made up multiple stories to cover for his actions and blame others for what he did. They say he did it numerous times over his life. We obviously hoped for a different result but we respect the judges decision, it was an extremely difficult case, and we appreciate the time and the attention that she gave to it,” said Assistant Iowa Attorney General Denise Timmons. After the verdict Dominics family didnt want comment outside the courtroom. Metzker-Madsen will now go to the Iowa Medical and Classification Center in Coralville where he could stay for a short period of time and be sent to DHS, or he could stay for an extended period of time depending on his evaluations.
