1 JPAU at Work: Vision by CPL Jake Sims in Nhulunbuy, NT Members of the Australian Army’s 17th Brigade established a camp at Gove, Northern Territory, as part of the Australian Defence Force support to the Prime Minister’s visit to North-East Arnhem Land in September 2014. Sixty Army personnel setup the camp in two days after travelling for three, transporting all their supplies and equipment with them on the 3000km round trip. Following a request from the Prime Minister, The Hon Tony Abbott MP, the Australian Defence Force provided logistical support to the Prime Minister’s visit to North-East Arnhem Land to spend a week engaging with local Indigenous communities and community leaders in September 2014. Elements of 10th Force Support Battalion provided catering and logistical services to establish a camp at the Gulkala (Garma) site near Gove, Northern Territory, for up to 150 people. During the visit the Prime Minister met members of the North-West Mobile Force (NORFORCE) and participated in a memorial service to Indigenous soldiers who fought in World War 2. Australian Indigenous soldiers form 60 percent of NORFORCE personnel, drawn mainly from the area they patrol to draw on local knowledge. The primary role of the regiment is reconnaissance, observation and the collection of military intelligence. Formed in 1981, the regiment is one of three Regional Force Surveillance Units (RFSUs) employed in surveillance and reconnaissance of the remote areas of Northern Australia.
