A man accused of head-butting his 7-week-old son cried in court Friday morning as the prosecutor outlined the events that led to his arrest. William Bently, 22, appeared at Middletown Municipal Court Friday for arraignment two days after deputies charged him with domestic violence and endangering children. The Middletown resident broke down during Fridays proceedings as the prosecutor told the court that Bentlys son suffered bruises to his nose and mouth. He also described the boy has having open cuts in and around the his mouth. The Butler County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were called to Middletown Atrium Hospital at about 1 p.m. Wednesday in response to a report of abuse to an infant. Deputies said the 7-week-old suffered serious facial injuries. The child is said to be in stable condition at Dayton Children’s Hospital and the injuries do not appear to be life-threatening. “It is absolutely disgusting that someone can do this to a baby. I have advised investigators to charge this individual with the fullest extent of the law,” Sheriff Richard Jones said Thursday. Investigators said Bently originally told them it was an accident, but later admitted to them he head-butted the infant multiple times in the face. He said he did it because the boy would not stop crying. He was angry with the baby about 4 oclock in the morning, he was trying to feed it. The baby wouldnt stop crying so he got really upset with the baby and pretty much picked the baby up and smashed him against his forehead twice in the mouth area, Det. Hung Tri-Rudolph said. Bently is being held at the Middletown Jail on on a $100,000 bond. He will be back in court next week.
