A special shout out to one of Los Angeles essential artists, Nancy Keystone, artistic director of Critical Mass Performance Group on the very special occasion of being named a Doris Duke Foundation Fellow. Nancy, as many of us know, is one of the great theatrical minds in Los Angeles. Her productions, her process, her company work, and her talent as a director not only illuminate her subjects, but she continues to move the field forward with her thinking and investment. Her company will develop a piece over many years and build towards something sublime and extraordinary with so much depth. I adore her as a friend, colleague and inspiration. I am very lucky in my artistic life to have had the honor of engaging professionally with her and company as a producer of her Apollo piece at the Kirk Douglas Theatre when we inaugurated that space. I learned so much and grew to appreciate the journey (sometimes lonely and incredibly complicated) that goes into making these pieces. More than that, I just love having lunch with Nancy, her red lips, allergies and genius mind. May the rest of world discover what we Angelenos already know about this amazing artist. Kudos!
