ATTENTION PARENTS!!! Calling on all 1st, 2nd and 3rd year parents/guardians of students who attend CPA Achill, I dislike having to use social media to make this point but however I am unable to contact every parent individually at this point, so I am using this system as a way of first contact. Today I rang the school and voiced my concerns about the weight of the pupil’s school bags. I was speaking with a very understanding and compassionate member of staff. I was informed that I was the 2nd call the school had received this morning in relation to the weight of the school bags and could fully understand my concerns. I said “If we just stand by and allow this to continue, it will!” I strongly feel, as responsible parents, that we should do something about this. However, myself and the other parent are only 2, so I fear our voice will carry no weight (excuse the pun), it was suggested that ALL concerned parents should contact the school directly, so the issue could be addressed. Now rather than barrage the school with lots of phone calls and disrupt their duties, I think it would be wise to write a letter with every concerned parents signature, which addresses our concerns and post it directly to the school along with a copy to the Board of Management. There are some important points to consider here. A good many parents have made their concerns known (to me and each other) and a few have said “well we did it ourselves” but the points I want you to consider are: 1. The books OUR kids are carrying are a 3 times bigger and heavier than in our time, because the books they have now do them for 3 years. 2. Our children are still growing and developing and any student having to stoop over because of the weight of their books cannot be good for their backs, shoulders, necks and legs. 3. 5 text books, 3 copies, a diary and a pencil case weighed just over 11kg (11.4kg to be precise) and YES, each book was needed for homework! Now if YOU, as a parent are concerned with YOUR child carrying that weight day in and out, to and from the bus, and around from class to class, then I urge you to please PM me, ring or text me. I strongly feel that it is verging on child abuse to expect our youth in any post primary school to carry a load that the average man would not carry daily, let alone a developing adolescent. I got the shock of my life and imagined every bone my son’s body cracking with the weight of his school bag. Once again, if you are concerned (and many are) then please spread the word and make contact with me ASAP. Thank you. Please LIKE and SHARE this post so it can reach as many parents/guardians as possible.
