Afghanistan and Pak media This refers to the editorial note “Kabul attacked” in a reputed national daily. While referring to the recent attempt by Taliban to attack the presidential palace in Kabul, the note concludes that Afghanistan’s partition along ethnic and sectarian lines is not farfetched. Pakistan’s print and electronic media unfortunately is enthusiastically wishful for the last 35 years and to impress on its readers and viewers that Afghanistan is falling apart sooner than expected. Despite the holy predictions of Political analyzers, Afghanistan has survived very hard times and is still intact as a state. One cannot understand the reason why after all the Pakistani media and its intellectuals are in such an uneasy and restless haste for the disintegration and demise of Afghanistan? According to their estimates Afghanistan should have breathed its last in seventies, otherwise eighties were the most appropriate years for its down fall and nineties was perhaps getting too late for the ultimate happening. It is painful to see that not a word of sympathy can be found for either Afghanistan or its people in the print media. We usually hear and read in papers that people of Afghanistan have also no word of sympathy for Pakistan because they blame her for most of their troubles. It needs no arguments to make it prove that Pakistan has missed not a single chance to discourage Afghanistan as its nearest Muslim neighbor. Since the departure of Taliban and intrusion of America and her NATO allies in that country, a lot has changed and Afghanistan has reemerged as a wholesome state with political and other state institutions. Almost the entire world has contributed to the reconstruction of Afghanistan which is continuing till this day. The point is that all these gains must not go waste and must not be surrendered to Taliban who believe only in brute force and whose rise to power can be nothing less than the misfortune of the entire region in general and for the entire Pakhtoon belt in Pakistan in particular. This will be a hell like situation. Why the Pakistani media and its intellectuals, wisdom find it impossible to stop short of the disintegration of Afghanistan? Afghanistan must survive as a sovereign state and a peaceful and stable Afghanistan is in favor of the progress and prosperity of the entire region and particularly in favor of Pakistan. Therefore Afghanistan has a right over its neighbors that they should neither bite nor make attempts to devour that oldest state of the region. Ghani Khan Khattak Islamabad
