Agawam cub scouts help collect food for local pantry AGAWAM, Mass. (WWLP) – As Thanksgiving approaches, many food pantries are in dire need of donations to help feed hundreds of families in need in Western Massachusetts. With colder weather, some families must decide between paying to heat their home or spending it on food. This, while food prices are increasing. But Sunday, cub scouts in Agawam hosted a food drive to help ease that burden for families. They stood for hours outside Geisslers Supermarket in Agawam, asking shoppers to consider buying something extra. The scouts handed out flyers and told shoppers they needed nonperishable items like canned goods, cereals and boxed pastas. Scouts weren’t just collecting food donations: they were also collecting money donations. That will allow the pantry to buy any perishable items or other foods that are in highest demand. When Rich Dean started shopping, the scouts hadn’t set up yet, but he still looked through his own groceries to find something to donate as he left. “I’m one less can of soup so I’m going to have to suffer during the week but that’s fine,” joked Dean. “You know what? It’s going to someone who needs it more than I do…I hope it goes a long way,” he added. The donations will all benefit the Agawam Food Pantry located at Bethany Assembly of God. “The motto for cub scout is to do your best and so we wanted to incorporate that in everything they do, so whether school or giving back to their community,” said Sandy MacDonald, the Cubmaster for Pack 82 of Agawam. Through the scouts’ efforts, they hoped one more mouth would be fed, especially during the holidays.
