Almost four years ago today was Eid al-Fitr, which in the Islamic calendar, marks the breaking of the fast after Ramadan. During this time, while I was still in Iraq, I was attached to the Provincial Reconstruction Team and we, along with 3rd Platoon, 1st Battalion, 10th Field Artillery not only conducted a follow up on the Chalanah water purification plant, but we also conducted a humanitarian drop in commemoration of Eid. Villagers of Chalanah received care packages, which consisted of shoes donated from the Goodwill of Columbus, Georgia, blankets, pillows, backpacks for children that contained various school supplies, books donated from Scholastic, and soccer balls. Despite this region of the world being devastated by sectarian violence, people still smiled as if theyre having the time of their lives, enjoying life to its fullest.
