An essay in response to ‘There is nothing the body suffers the soul may not profit by’ POSITIVE MENTAL ATITUDE ‘What doesn’t kill us makes us stronger’. Some people may argue the contrary but for the majority this simple statement reflects the optimism in the trial and tribulations people face during their lifetimes. This belief that the metaphorical ‘sticks and stones’ may cause physical harm or at a minimum a dented ego only serves to make us stronger as a person, this could easily go hand in hand with ‘all things happen for a reason’. It brings hope and sometimes a sense of relief that the particular challenge we are facing has a worthy and deeper impact upon us. Whether its walking solo to the North pole or facing a particularly messy divorce the suffering with in the experience will somehow leave us a better more balanced and stronger human being. Of course there are those who would quite rightly argue this experience or view point is not shared by everyone, namely those that fall into depression or have a mental breakdown and end up in a perpetual spiral of defeat and self-destruction. It is at times like this that the immortal words ‘I never have any luck’ or ‘nothing good ever happens to me’ are uttered. For these people it is very difficult to comprehend that there is any worth to their predicaments. You could call it the path of the pessimist! Perhaps though there is a strong counter for the pessimistic view point that the decline in mental health or descent into a depressive quagmire is actually all part of the experience for, if and when they climb the parapet and break free from the dark tunnel of despair the experience will have far greater impact and meaning than for the optimistic members of society. This of course is easy to say when you’re a perpetual optimist yourself and don’t wallow in self-pity every time you are faced with a challenge or unsavoury blip on the long and winding road of life. In response to George Merediths original statement I would be inclined to agree that this can be applied to the majority of people although for a lot of those people they will be unaware of this inner growth. For many others it fits very nicely into a positive mental attitude that is the corner stone of their moral fibre.
