Below is the words I wrote and spoke at my brothers Funeral Mass I was asked to share and it is my JOY to share it with those friends and family who could not attend but in spirit. Gods Territory When the sun lifts it’s heavy yellowy head up and over the distant horizon for it’s 4 billionth encore performance and spreads it’s warmth like creamy peanut butter over our sleepy little souls - we are in Gods Territory. When the fullest of moon’s rises up and draws a deep breath and spits out a billion sparkly diamonds that dance on the waters surface for a moment, then tumble to the bottom of the bottomless sea - we are in Gods Territory. When an evening snow blankets our world and wraps us up in a quilt of silence, white on white on white on white - we are in Gods Territory. When our tired heads explode on a sweaty pillow in the middle of the night, projecting Technicolor dreams onto our eye lids, dreams of castles, coal mines, lovers and broken bones - we are in Gods Territory. When the wind dances from branch to branch to branch and no one seems to notice but the banana spider - we are in Gods Territory When a whale lifts and arches it’s glistening back up and out of the sea just for you to see and mumbles I am bigger than you are - we are in Gods Territory. When the robin has a tug of war with a muddy earth worm and the worm wins - we are in Gods Territory When the geese fly over head navigating in the darkness of night sharing secrets in a language we will never understand - we are in Gods Territory When a caterpillar with all 16 trembling legs holds on for dear life on the windshield of life at 65 miles per hour - we are in Gods Territory. When the leaves on the trees grow tired and bored of being green, they turn, then tumble and back flip in a psychedelic circus act right before our very eyes - we are in Gods Territory When the coyotes gather under a harvest moon and argue for hours over what’s for dinner - we are in Gods Territory When the words I DO echo in a crowed church in the promise of ever lasting love -we are in Gods Territory When a mother whispers Everything is going to be okay” into a child’s ear - we are in Gods Territory. When we laugh so hard our faces hurt and we wet our pants - we are truly in Gods Territory In the easy silence and comfort of very close friends who love us - we are in Gods Territory When anyone, anywhere, in any language says I love you - we are in Gods Territory When each of us, in the end, lay quietly on our back, fighting for our last breath and dreaming of just one more sunrise and one more summer. When we lay surrounded by loved ones, mysteries without any cures and machines that hum out of tune - we are in Gods Territory.
