According to the Associated Press and Santafenewmexican, attorneys representing two horse slaughterhouses, Responsible Transportation in Iowa and Valley Meat Company in Roswell, argued about their proposed losses, claiming they had intended to begin domestic horse slaughter on Monday. The companies told the judges their losses could reach tens of millions of dollars in the next few months. The plaintiffs were doubtful of the stated anticipated losses the horse slaughterhouse attorneys claimed, referring to it as "creative accounting." Last week a temporary injunction under the National Environmental Protection Act for the failure to conduct environmental reviews was granted to the Humane Society and Front Range Equine Rescue. A bond is required to cover speculative harm and losses sustained by the two slaughterhouses if the plaintiffs do not prevail. Meanwhile Robert Redford, former New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, Gov. Susana Martinez, and Attorney General Gary King are among 80% of the American population who strongly oppose the return of domestic horse slaughter. At least temporarily, no horses are being slaughtered in the United States. Both the House of Representatives and Senate appropriations committees have already voted to halt all funding for horse slaughter in FY 2014. A request for Congress to prevent tax dollars from supporting horse slaughter was also included. In addition the Safeguard American Food Exports Act would ban slaughter operations in the U.S. and end the export of American horses for slaughter in order to protect consumers from eating toxic meat.
