Chieftains and Cougars Endure 0-0 Draw Rabobank Stadium, Salinas – The Palma soccer team came away with a 0-0 draw against Christopher Thursday evening. Despite holding an advantage in shots (5-3) and corner kicks (2-1), Palma (1-1-1, 4-3-3) was unable to capitalize on their chances. But, they played a strong, physical brand of defense to prevent any momentum for Christopher. It was a tough game. Palma had a lot of possession and several opportunities to score. The Chieftain’s rebounded well from last Thursday’s 2-1 loss to Seaside. The Seaside game was a little frantic, but tonight the Chieftains returned to a patient, possession game using the entire width of the field to build their attack. Palma had a number of close chances during the second half, including what appeared to be the go-ahead goal in the 56th minute when Miguel Mendez got through the Christopher defense with only Cougar keeper Carlos Arroyo in front him. Christopher’s last defender took a risk in the box to clear the ball from behind, clearing out Mendez as well, but the officials saw it as a clean play. A few minutes later Mendez had another shot that he drilled just wide into the side netting. The Chieftains seemed to keep the ball on Christopher’s side of the pitch for most of the 2nd half, out shooting the Cougars 5-1. Palma keeper John Pezzini tallied 2 saves in the second half, both in traffic and both could easily have been tipped in for a go-ahead score. Steven Johnsen had an uneventful first half with no shots on goal. Sophomore Carlos Arroyo had 2 saves for Christopher. Arroyo also came up late in the 2nd half to take a free kick from 60 yards delivering a dangerous ball into the box. This was Palmas third tie of the season and the first time they’ve been shutout since their season opening loss to Stevenson. This is the second shutout of a league opponent for the Palma defense and the third of the season. JV: Palma 1, Christopher 1 The Chieftains travel to North Salinas for a 3:30 match on Tuesday. The JV play at 3:30, too.
