Crossing the bridge into a professional screenwriting career in - TopicsExpress

Crossing the bridge into a professional screenwriting career in Hollywood is maddening. A screenwriters cognitive dissonance is the abject frustration he or she experiences after getting coverage from a Hollywood reader when they were expecting a certain level of validation. This anger is made worse by understanding the subjective nature of criticism. Add to this the authors *belief* that most readers are themselves frustrated writers who could find fault with even the best scripts. But the Hollywood reader is the gatekeeper. The real problem for screenwriters is that their true audience is incredibly small. Unlike a movie, a script will very rarely be viewed as entertainment. The vast majority of people who read a script will be either close, supportive, encouraging friends or paid, critical, time-limited, and yes, sometimes even bitter, Hollywood readers. The intentions of these two groups are separated by the Grand Canyon. Unfortunately, like the Grand Canyon Skywalk, the bridge doesnt cross.
