Delta, Edo communities at loggerheads over boundary News Thursday, March 6, 2014 BY Emma Amaize WARRI-THERE is renewed tension between Overe Eku community in Agbon Kingdom, Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State and Orogho community, Orhionmwon Local Government Area of Edo State over boundary dispute. The dispute between the two communities started when a petroleum company, Newcross, started oil exploration in the area. Both communities are claiming ownership of the land where the company is operating. President General of Eku, Chief Joseph Ukueku, who addressed newsmen on the mounting tension, claimed that the Enogie of Orogho, in a letter dated September 20, 2013, wanted to introduce Bini tradition to his people. He said the Enogie referred to Eku (Iwevbo) as Iwvbo, an Edo community, adding, Our people are seeing this as a clear ethnic cleansing cum modern day colonisation. We reject such a move by the Binis. We call on relevant authorities to call the Enogie to order. The Enogie should be well tutored on who his subjects are, and not over step his bound. Our culture and tradition are not the same, so we cannot be Binis, he added. Chief Ukueku had protested to the Delta State Government over the incursion, adding: We are taking our protest to the Federal Government shortly. Vanguard gathered that since the creation of Edo and Delta States in 1991, there has not been any clear demarcation in the River Ethiope axis of the two states.
