EVENTS – FOR WEEK Feb. 07-14, 2014 *Friday, February 07 - African American History Month event at UTD James Sweatt III will speak on Minorities and Changing Times, One Person’s Experience for African American History Month at noon Friday, Feb. 7, in the Bluebonnet Ballroom of the E.H. Hereford University Center. The African American Faculty and Staff Association sponsors his appearance. A retired board-certified thoracic surgeon, Dr. Sweatt was the first African American to graduate from the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Mo. He was the first African American appointed to the board of directors of Parkland Memorial Hospital and the first African American president of the Dallas County Medical Society. He is the nephew of civil rights pioneer Heman Marion Sweatt who successfully challenged UT Austin’s admission policy and became the first African American admitted to the UT School of Law.
