From the Waco Tribune Herald Cameron Yoe (10-4) vs. Edna (9-5) Last Week: Yoe def. Rockdale 44-25, Edna def. Hallettsville 28-21 Players to Watch: Cameron Yoe RB Traion Smith, Cameron Yoe WR Aaron Sims; Edna RB Marquis Broussard, Edna QB Landon O’Connor Key Matchup: Yoe RB Traion Smith vs. Edna 4-3 defense Breakdown: It seems a lifetime ago that these two teams were under .500. Edna began their 2014 campaign a mere 1-4, Yoe at 2-3. But the state semifinals are here, and so are both of these teams, chomping at the bit for a chance at a state title. Yoe has rattled off eight in a row, winning its four playoff games by a margin of nearly 21 points. Cameron has not lost a playoff game in three years, and it seems the Yoemen step up when it matters. This year has been no different. Cameron seemes to struggle a bit moving the ball last week against Rockdale and it was its defense that made the real impact. Aaron Sims and John Washington both scored defensively on interceptions, giving the Yoemen a cushion and eventually pulling away for a comfortable win. RB Traion Smith never could find his rhythm, gaining only 67 yards on the ground. That needs to change this week against an Edna defense that seems to ride a “bend but don’t break” mentality. “Their defense is a little different,” Yoe head coach Rick Rhoades said. “Most of the time you will see a 4-3, while their coverage preference is probably a cover-3. They are a well-coached team and play very good defense.” Edna’s rushing attack, on the other hand, was brilliant last week. RB Marquis Broussard carried most of the load, hammering out 242 yards on 34 carries. Cowboys QB Landon O’Connor can beat you several ways. He is not afraid to get dirty and run the ball, something the Yoemen front seven must be prepared for. Having advanced this far in the playoffs, most teams are unfamiliar with their next opponent. Not for these two. Cameron took it to Edna last year in the Bidistrict playoffs, 59-20. Rhoades knows a year can make a huge difference. “It’s hard to tell until you get right next to them (how big or fast they are),” Rhoades said. They might look like they are fast, but you never know how fast these teams are (until you play).”
