Got in some new visitors yesterday evenin. With company comin, we spent a fair bit of our day cleanin the house, then started work tryin to get all the dog hair off of the pickup truck seats so that we can retrieve more visitors from the airport in a couple of days. Egad, our dogs must be pert near bald as there was enough hair clued to the truck seat cushions that could cover another dog or two! Though we spied a few cows out in the far southeast field we stayed too busy sprucin up the place an figured that the cows would probably make their way up through the south pasture to wait at the gate for us to let em back to their own pasture, but by evenin none of the cows had shown up so after dinner we headed out in search of cows. It was unusually quiet in the far southeast section but we did spy two cows standin near the river rip-rap. They must have been the look-outs as when they spotted us they began to bawl. Okay so where was the rest of the herd? The way the two look-outs were actin we guessed that the rest of the cows must have actually navigated down the rock laden rip-rap an crossed the stream to gain access to what can sort of be described as an island...a piece of ground that is generally flooded durin spring run-off but other wise provides wildlife with some grazing in an area that is thickly wooded with alder trees. With this bit of information we circled south, well beyond the river rip-rap, then crossed a small stream. We were now on the island an obviously the land of the giants as we quickly found ourselves wadin through patches of Tanzy an orchard grass that towered well over our heads. Since we couldnt see any farther n what was right in front of us we could only guess at where the cows might be. By n by we came upon signs of cow but still couldnt see anything, then finally spotted the bull an one cow an headed in their direction, but they quickly disappeared. We finally popped out of the brush at the stream. Still no cows, but there was sign that theyd been there so we forded the stream an climbed up over the rip-rap. It felt great to be able to see farther n we could spit, but there was no sign of the cows. Either they had out snookered us in the dense island growth or they had stampeded for home range. We decided to assume the latter. But which way did they go? West, then north up through the south pasture, or north toward the pump-house an east river pastures? Ifn wed of had a coin wed have flipped it to see which way to go but neither of us had any pocket change so we decided that we check the north route first an if we didnt see any sign of em we could go with the other route later, or go back to bushwhackin through the island grass an brush. Luckily we didnt have to go far before we spied a clump of black bodies huddled together gainst the pump-house pasture fence an pond. We almost missed seein em as they were almost hidden by another large patch of Tansy. From there it was easy goin. We opened a near by gate an the dogs had great fun roundin up the cows an givin em a good push home. Photo for today: Cows an dogs headed home.
