Green Heron We are happy campers. We saw a Green Heron! Its only the second one weve seen, though we have been doing bird photography for a good many years. In lots of places these birds could be. Oh, there have been other possible sightings. You know the kind - Was that a Green Heron?!!- as they fly by or disappear into the brush. These are small herons (about 18 in length) and they are very shy. Even in a place that gets a lot of human traffic, he did not want to stick around. I have been stymied by why they are called green. However, if you look closely, you will see not only a green cast to his feathers, but green feathers along his sides. Truly green or not, this is one beautiful bird. He is in his breeding plumage, which definitely helps!! But even in his normal feathers, he is a beauty and a very fun sighting. The frosting? We actually got a few snaps off before he flew! ;-) allaboutbirds.org/guide/green_heron/id Please feel free to share this photo.
