Greetings, I would like to share with you some startling numbers. Blossomwood Elementary-589, Challenger Elementary-382, Goldsmith Schiffman Elementary 606, Hampton Cove Elementary-593, Hampton Cove Middle 762, Chaffee Elementary 412, Weatherly Heights Elementary 534, Huntsville Middle 537, Huntsville High School-1464, Grissom High-1009, Highlands Elementary- 59, Rolling Hills Elementary-0, Lakewood Elementary-0, Martin Luther King Elementary-40, Montview Elementary 64, Davis Hills Middle-28, Ed White Middle- 36, Johnson High-111. Sadly, these number represent membership in school PTA’s. These numbers suggest that we on the North end of town are not taking ownership of our situation. We have to show our children, our community, and other communities that we are committed to our students and our schools. There are some numbers that we can do some things to change, but we do not have 100% total control over their change. We can change the environment, teaching techniques, educational strategies, etc and create an atmosphere where things SHOULD change. However, we have 100% control over one number. We have 100% control over the number of people that joins our PTA. Anyone that fills out an application, pays their fees, and supports the National PTA mission statement can become a member. You don’t have to live in the district or have a child at the school. Anyone and everyone in the community can and should join. Join multiple PTA’s. Let’s send a message to our children that we are behind them. Let’s make a commitment to them! We may not agree on everything, and that’s OK. When 2 people agree on everything only 1 of them are thinking. However, if we can all agree that we want the best for our children, we can, despite our differences on approach, find commonality in helping our kids achieve their best. I’m PTA president at Johnson High this year. My goal is 300 members. I want you guys to make me look bad. Make me look like it was ridiculous to think that we would ONLY get 300 members. Let’s start with membership, and let’s build from there. I must admit that I got punched in the nose by a question the other night. Someone filled out an application and asked me when our next meeting was. I did not have an answer. She responded that I have a lot of nerve to be giving passionate speeches and asking for money and don’t even have a meeting scheduled. Today, I still do not have an answer to that question, but I will meet with the principal soon and get an answer to that question as soon as possible. However, let’s all get on the same team and resolve those problems together. I can’t promise you that I will be perfect, because I won’t. I’m new to this and will make mistakes along the way. I will, however, promise you my best effort. Promise me the same from you, and let’s work together for the good of our children.
