Happy Eid Dil Fitri to all muslims over the world. If I say all over the world, I mean anywhere in the world where the festive season is being observed today - because it could beat the judgement of some people reading this that, how can he wish us [Happy Eid Dil Fitri] when we arent part of it. Today has been declared the end of Ramadan by the Sultan of Sokoto, Abubakar Saad, who is also the President of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, saying NSCIA, had around midnight on Saturday announced the sighting of the new moon and therefore the end of Ramadan. With this announcement, if we really want to go by the judgement of our leader, we should all be in joyous mood waiting with keen interest to mark the end of fasting provided we started with the same announcement but it beats my imagination when I read through a telephone conversation conducted by PREMIUM TIMES with Mr Is-haq Oloyede, a professor of islamic studies who is the Secretary-General of the above named organisation saying he was not aware that the moon been sighted. Though, am not surprised with his statement because his camp didnt start with us when we commenced the fasting but what I refuse to understand is the level of misunderstanding going on within the council. Isnt the disagreement in the council ridiculous and mockery? How can a president made a declaration, and the secretary says hes not aware of it? Just because their last conversation didnt contain such. And am forced to ask, does the committee for the sighting of moon take decisions without the consent of the executive? Or, is it that everyone there doesnt have a common ground? Because I just cant imagine the level of information and counter-information coming from the same organisation. I think this is a religious issue, by that, it should supercede any personal ego of wanting to control the crowd or be the first to make a pronouncement, or still, nursing an erroneous concept so that you do not conform with others when decision making is made. If these people do not know they are leading and misleading the general islamic populace with their actions then I urge them they should sit up and do the right thing for our sake. Am just trying within my capacity to control myself, because right now, I feel like lambasting both the President and the Secretary for not having a common ground on this matter. Its very essential in islam that we follow our leaders and if they mis-inform us then the sin becomes theirs. I ate saom this morning but as am putting this piece together I have broken it, though couldnt observe Solatul Eid because there was no where within my area except the town but the information got to me very lately so couldnt make it. Once again, happy Eid Dil Fitri to all muslims who have had a fast for the last twenty-nine days.
