Heifetz. When he recorded this, he was in the middle of playing - TopicsExpress

Heifetz. When he recorded this, he was in the middle of playing hundreds of overseas for U.S. soldiers. Born and raised in Lithuania, Heifetz was a household name by 1944 and one of the highest paid musicians in history. But when WWII came he grabbed a young piano player, put on an Army uniform, and left it behind to travel with the U.S. military, playing well forward in military hospitals. He played far more concerts than he was contracted to, and went out of his way to play personally for our wounded, even at some risk to himself. He had a flagpole in his front yard at his house in Malibu, and ceremoniously raised and lowered it every day. When he had house guests he insisted they attend and pay their respects to the flag. He was a great musician, and a great American. Mark OConnor
