Heres a virtual movie of the great Walt Whitman reading his exquisite ode to the joys of Manhattan as a contrast to the joys of nature Give me the Splendid, Silent Sun first published in Drum Taps in May of 1865. His long beautiful poem dedicated to the angst and passions of the American Civil War. Walt Whitman (1819-1892 was born in Long Island, New York, the son of a Quaker carpenter. Whitmans mother was descended from Dutch farmers. In Whitmans childhood there were slaves employed on the farm. Whitman was early on filled with a love of nature.
