Heres the latest update from Gerald! This week I was invited to fire a new state-of-the-art snipers rifle at Bisley. If I am not too economical with the truth, I would have to admit that my scores were far from scintillating, but the day was hugely valuable to me in terms of learning about the skills and disciplines of those marksmen. As yet, the call to come forward and serve in Afghanistan has not been made. But, the champagne moment of the day came when the rifles on the Stickledown range all fell silent. Half way between the shooters and the targets, 900 yards distant, came a massive stag with a really fine head of antlers. He never sprinted, galloped, or broke from a steady and calm stride: he was not to be hurried. He showed off a massive arrogance, then bellowed, then disappeared - and the sounds of war erupted again over the Surrey countryside. I was with Bisley veterans and they had never seen the like of him before.
