Hi all. Some of you know Buster Bravo (my black-and-white Tibetan Terrier who likes to walk by the group and stroll straight to the corner of the field by himself:)). I wanted to let you all know what was going on with him, and see if any of you had any experience with cancer in dogs and with UC Davis. To make a long story short, two weeks ago the vet found two tumors in Busters throat. He was diagnosed with thyroid cancer and the recommended treatment was surgery. (Dr. Melcon is my vet at Marina Pet Hospital and the surgeon that was brought in was Dr. Sean Wells). They were able to remove the tumor on the left side and it was pretty straight forward. The larger tumor on the right side was more complicated as it was attached to a nerve in his throat which controls the larynx. They had to remove this nerve; turns out he can live normally with one nerve hell just have a raspier bark. Today I got the results of the pathology and it wasnt the news I was hoping for. He has thyroid adeno carcinoma. While there is no evidence that it has spread to his lungs or to his lymph nodes, Dr. Melcon says its a very aggressive cancer and can grow rapidly. She told me to follow up with an oncologist and she thinks he will need chemo. Obviously I had hoped that the cancer was out and it was over... But as we embark in this next step, I wanted to ask if any of you had any experience treating cancer with chemo and/or radiation (in dogs), and if any of you had any experience taking your dogs to UC Davis veterinary hospital. Feel free to private message me if you have, Id love to talk to you about your experience. Ill keep you posted, in the meantime thanks for your help. Larissa and Buster
