I am extremely pleased that Maine Conservation Voters game me a perfect score for voting for environmentally important legislation in the 1st session of the 126th Legislature. These were: requiring large producers to label products with BPA, supporting a paint recycling program (an industry initiative), directing the DEP to assess the environmental effects of climate change (a project DEP has dropped under Gov. Le Page), genetically modified organisms (GMO) labeling, water quality protection from mining, opening the St. Croix River to Alewives, and wind-power siting. While I did not follow which bills were being scored, I did adhere to my values and those of most Yarmouth residents in supporting these vital measures. The Governor vetoed the following: climate change and toxic substance labeling. The mining bill was killed in the Senate. So much remains to be done on these and other matters.
