I believe the kids call it beatering. -- NRS correspondent Kyle Smith reports from Mexico. The sounds of coffee percolating and rain falling on the thatched roof filled the air this morning. Following a season of guiding on the Salmon, myself and a handful of Idahoans headed to Aventurec, a kayaking haven. Located in the heart of Mexican Basalt and waterfall country, Tlapacoyan, Mexico is swathed in rain clouds and saturated soil. With boat rentals and housing lined up ahead of time, we were able to travel light, packing only soft paddling gear and break-out paddles. Shaking off the rust of a season of rowing, the Idaho constituency has been chipping away at the Mexican classics: Big Banana, Roadside, San Pedro, etc. With the assist of some seasoned regional paddlers, the put-in of steep upper Jalacingo blessed the worn hulls of our boats. Moments after pushing off, I found myself sliding down giant stone drain pipes, routing off of 25 foot drops blind and hitting must-make eddies just above sieves and caves, which nothing returns from once they enter. After a long day of slick portaging and high speed rock-sliding over 40-foot precipices, the final significant drop of the day arrived. I sat in the pouring rain, eating a Snickers bar and letting the cameras roll as paddlers flew down the pipe, zinging from wall to wall and terminating in a 15-foot launch ramp. Snapping my spray skirt closed, Johnny Chase looked at me in disbelief. I cant believe you arent going to wear a GoPro on this drop! Its the most insane drop of the day. Johnny said. I do have one in my Watershed...should I wear it? Duh! he responded. I dont like wearing GoPros all that much, especially on nerve-racking runs where I should just be focusing on getting down alive. Nevertheless, I thought about it, unsnapped my skirt, opened my watershed, affixed the camera, sealed the dry bag and this is what happened next. I believe the kids call it beatering.
