I felt the need to share this post because there are some thoughts expressed here that I, myself, have been thinking. At this point in time, I seriously can’t imagine that there are too many people out there that aren’t “aware” of breast cancer. I’ve observed the huge displays of “pink” in retail stores from thrift shops to Macy’s, from Big Lots to Wal-Mart and I have to say, I’ve wondered where the profits from these sales are going. Perhaps the cause would be better served if everyone saved the money they would spend on all manner of pink “fluff” and instead donated that money directly to breast cancer research. And that in itself can be tricky. Just because a charity has the word cancer or research in its name does not mean that it is directing a substantial amount of its money to finding a cure for cancer, alleviating suffering or offering prevention education. It’s necessary to scrutinize a charity before making a donation. In my research, I’ve found two organizations that, in my opinion, are worthy of my donation dollars. The Breast Cancer Research Foundation spends $.90 of every dollar donated to actually fund breast cancer research. This is far more than the American Cancer Society or any of the other “charitable organizations” that I investigated. It appears that Susan G Komen ends up giving about $.20 per dollar on actual research. The National Breast Cancer Coalition is largely a lobbying organization that focuses on policy advocacy and increasing the amount of federal funding thats awarded to breast cancer research. While the Susan G. Komen foundation has raised about $1.9 billion for breast cancer over the course of the organizations 30-year existence, last year the NBCC convinced Congress to award more than $2.1 billion to breast cancer research. And they did it without the middleman. I will now descend from my soapbox. LOVE YOU ALL!
