I found this YouTube video of the War Ink project, which my nephew Chris Brown (son of my sister Celeste) has been developing with US military veterans in his role as a Senior Community Library Manager at Contra Costa County Library, incredibly moving. The website, warink.org, launches 11.11.14. Eerily, the vets stories were also personally resonant. Ive never been to war but my battle with breast cancer has left visible scars - across the left side of my chest (where my left breast used to be before mastectomy), on my left side (where my lymph node biopsy that confirmed the cancer was performed), in my left armpit (where my lymph nodes were removed), on my right arm (where my PICC line was inserted for 18 weeks of chemo). I never had to be anywhere as brave and heroic as these vets - but I can relate to the feelings of loss and disorientation they describe (all of a sudden all the things that are really important to you all of a sudden disappear...your path isnt exactly in front of you like it has been for so many years). Yes, that makes total sense to me. Check out this video, its full of beautiful storytelling (the silences speak volumes). Well done, Chris (and those who worked with you).
