I have listened to a few poems, short stories, and random bits of prose read by Nika Harper recently. She is an amazing talent (some may remember her best as the voice of league of Legends fan division) but more than that she has the same introduction to all of her videos and audio clips. I am Nika Harper, and I am an author. There is something profound about that direct statement that got to me. More than just a recognition of her own talent, its an affirmation of identity. A claiming of who you are and what you intend with your life. She made the bold move to break with a very profitable company and career to peruse her own creative goals and share the results with the world. Every introduction is one more chance to proclaim to the world exactly who and what she is with out any doubt or lingering question. It might not mean much to someone who has never thought of themselves as a writer, but one of the hardest things is to claim it. to own it. To really BE it. She managed that with two seconds at the start of every introduction. To me that is enviable, praiseworthy and an aspiration I have for myself. I hope that sometime soon that sentence will be appended to my name when i introduce myself. First, more writing, then claiming to be a writer will be less of a stretch. But thanks Nika, for a little inspiration in the graveyard of time, to late to be night, to early to be morning, in the long stretch between yesterday, today, and tomorrow.
