I have recently been made aware of a post that stated: The United States has a defense treaty with the Ukraine. We are bound to defend them. Russia has invaded which leaves us no option but to come to their defense. If we do, this leads to war. If we do not, this leads to war. If we walked away from the Treaty, this would give China permission to invade Japan. This would also give North Korea permission to invade South Korea. But, the scariest thing of all is that Russia does not so this type of thing spontaneously. Their actions are very calculated. It is what is behind the curtain that Im worried about. Something is up, or a better way of putting it, something wicked this way comes. I find a few faults with this post and Im wondering what others thought. First, most people here are just hearing about whats going on in the Ukraine and it probably seems very terrible and escalated immediately. Things are terrible, but it has played out over time. Many people may take it out of the context it belongs and make it appear scarier to the public then it should. To start the Ukraine is trying to be admitted into the EU, and we are allies with the EU, especially since NATO. Now if the Europe goes to war with Russia it puts pressure on the US to enter especially since our allies came to our side in Iraq. Also the comments idea of our treaties is misaligned. Since the Cold War has ended and Russia is a shadow of its former self, the US is not as inclined to follow the EU to war as it would be to defend the Japanese. Our treaty with Japan was formed after World War II as a part of their surrender. The US is to act as Japans military which brings us into direct conflict if Japan was to be invaded, as if war is to break out on the Ukraine it would be seen as more on an ally then on the US. (Japans relations with the US are tired closer together.) However not honoring our treaties would give others to see a new advantage. Nations are not supposed to get involved in civil conflicts, which Russia is openly defying, but we also can make a correlation with Syria. Although very different both the US and Russia are involved in the civil war in Syria, and if military action is taken in the Ukraine it will pour over to Syria. But taking the actions of Russia in a more practical sense, they have a military base in the Ukraine, in the Crimea. They are naturally moving in to defend and secure their base, most likely while urging Crimea to break away from the Ukraine and become either a loyal state to Russia, or a part of Russia. This could easily escalate into direct war, but it is a natural reaction. If Germany were to be in a conflict itself, the we would want to secure our base at Ramstein. I am not on Russias side with this at all though, as it does violate the sovereignty of the people of Ukraine. Another point is, China has made an agreement with the United States to go to war with North Korea if it was to invade South Korea. If you remember the scare we had not too long ago about North Korea. If this is to be Some damned thing in the Balkans Chinas place may not be against us, but potentially allied, in which case Russia would collapse quickly. Chinas place can not be definitively placed though. If China was not to help, the war would be there and cost many American lives. With the cry to get out of the Iraq and bring our troops home, popular opinion of not getting involved in Syria, we may not even go to war though. The issue in the Ukraine should be taken more seriously though. There are soldiers in the Ukraine who cannot be identified as Russian or Ukrainian, which is cause for alarm, as well as it is a direct action on our allies, not a hypothetical terror. The people of the Ukraine should not be abandoned, and perhaps a show of force will show to Russia enough for them to back down.
