Im torn about this. On one hand, the kind of people who tote rifles and wear confederate flags arent people with any kind of real power. They tend to be poor, uneducated, and not really a threat these days. Racism isnt as simple as wating to hear some fool call people names, then declaring yourself better than them, as much as the doctrines of Political Correctness would like it to be. I also fear that this passes for fighting back, when in fact, its just taking pawns then sitting back and declaring victory, leaving the Kings and Queens untouched. On the other hand, so much of the power of the Conservative minority in this country comes from little enclaves online, or on TV, where you can go weeks without meeting someone who disagrees with you, or having to face the reality that the demographics of the country are shifting. Maybe its better that they get slapped hard every time they say nigger, so that they learn there are consequences, perhaps start to realize that the Confederacy died a pathetic death a long time ago, and that that all white, entitled culture has no real future. Maybe it makes cracks in the Fox News fantasy bubble. Maybe its better for the people involved to not be able to be a child anymore, punching blindly at the world and feeling safe that no-one will ever punch back. The gloating and mean-ness rubs me the wrong way. I dont think you can be a vindictive asshole for a good cause. You can just be an asshole, and its usually a sign of weakness. But if I look past that layer, maybe the hard consequences and cold dose of reality are worth it here? For everyone involved? Thoughts?
