In 2004 25-year old Carl Haynes just received his Texas barber’s License. Even though he use to cut hair for years out of his apartment. His dream of having his own barbershop could finally come true. He set out in Abilene Texas to look for a place to work so he could save money to open his own shop. He walked into a small 2 chair place called Keith’s Barbershop on South 7th street. It had one rectangle window in the front with a glass door. As he walked in he saw it had 2 barber chairs and a couple waiting chairs. There was one barber there and he was the owner, 66 year old Keith Slaton. He asked Keith if he could work in the empty chair. Keith said at his age of 66 he feels more comfortable working by himself. So Carl pursued other shops to work in. He ended up being interviewed by one of Abilene’s high-class salons on that Friday. They wanted him to start that Monday. It was exciting to him. One week out of having his barber license and he’s got a great start! That Sunday afternoon Keith calls Carl out the blue. He says he got to thinking about when he was Carl’s age and remembered how one man helped him out when he was just starting. He told Carl that it was his time to retire and decided to sell him his shop and everything in it for $1200. As long as the number stays the same.673-SHOP. It was a Christmas gift from his daughter a long time ago. She thought the number would be a good catchphrase word and an easy number to remember for her father’s barbershop. Carl took the offer handed to him without a second thought. Ecstatic as he was, he hated to tell the salon he just promised to work for tomorrow that he no longer could. He’s got his own shop! The manager was mad and showed no sign of good luck to him. From that day forth a barbershop was born by the name of Fresh Cuts Barbershop.
