It appears that our brave boy has lost his battle against the infection in his foot. Up until Tuesday he was doing great, or so we thought. He was gaining weight, had regrown all the fur in the areas where his skin had broken down, was getting around, begging for treats, and generally looking and acting like a happy and healthy bunny. When he started limping on Tuesday we opted to take him down to see Dr Crum more as a precaution than anything else. The news we got was devastating. As you can see from the x-ray, the infection never fully left his foot, and for the past few months has been gradually eating away at the bones in his wrist joint to the point that there is nothing left to support him. Because he is paralyzed in the back end, and because this is Sherlocks primary weight-bearing foot, even if we wanted to, we could not consider taking the leg off. And we wont, we knew the last surgery, where Sherlock nearly died, would be his last. He is truly our miracle bunny to have stayed with us as long as he has, and we have loved him for every minute of it. Sherlock is home right now on Hospice care, and we plan to help him across the Bridge early next week. You might wonder why we have not helped him across the Bridge already, and it is because we need to consider his brother Loki, who he will leave behind. Sherlock and Loki have never been separated, and their bond in incredibly tight - to the point that Loki was literally attacking the staff at SEAVS to protect his brother after the last surgery. We have travel obligations that will take us out of town for the weekend, and we will need to be there with Loki as he grieves. Sherlock is on a fairly high dose of both Tramadol and Metacam to keep him comfortable, and we can go higher if we need to. His picture is from this morning, he is still alert and begging for treats, eating, drinking, and pooping well, just less active than before. We are not seeing any tooth grinding, hunching, or other signs of pain. Please send prayers for both Sherlock and Loki, and for Emily, his bunny mom. It is because of the love and care that she has lavished upon him that he has done so well to this point. She, and the rest of our family, is heartbroken by this news.
