Its funny how when you tell someone youre an atheist, their knee - TopicsExpress

Its funny how when you tell someone youre an atheist, their knee jerk reaction is to ask then who made/caused everything?. While this in itself is a question worthy of inquiry, I find it strange that they do not see any irony in positing a God as the answer to it. It is ironic because they dont realize that by their reasoning they must necessarily discount any notion of a God because it too would require an explanation for its existence if a thing cannot exist without it having been created. And if they claim that God lies outside the realm of causality then theyve just shot down their initial premise for positing a God. It means they are conceding that it is possible for a thing to exist outside the realm of causality. This is where they get stuck because they now have the burden of having to prove that God is the only thing to which causality is inapplicable. Because this cant be done empirically (due to the believers insistence that this God theyve conceptualized is a non-physical entity), the only other proofs the believer may bring forth will likely be philosophical ones. And this is where the atheist smiles... because in the end the believer will have nothing else to go on besides appeals to ignorance or incredulity, both of which are logical fallacies, to make his case. You doubt this? Try and make a philosophical case for God and see what happens :-) . Not knowing the answer to something doesnt therefore mean youve proven the existence of God. All youve proven is that you dont have an answer. And therein lies the fundamental essence of religion - God, the concept, is just a placeholder for human ignorance. Were all looking for answers.
