Ive been retired from the force for some time now, and although I am retired I still feel a sense of pain and sadness when a fellow brother or sister is injured in the line of duty or is made to feel as though he or she is a criminal because they choose self preservation. Its not easy to take a life. It takes a certain person to take a job like ours. To keep the horrors of work bottled up from their families, so that their love ones arent consumed with fear as they walk out the door. We compensate, with humor and locker room shenanigans. But make no mistake most Police Officers really want to do what is right by its citizens. Just remember when most folks are running away from hell we run towards it. Even when every fiber of our being tells us not too. Not every situation on patrol is bang bang shoot outs. Their are situations that are heartwarming.Unfortunately, the act of kindness are never news worthy. I worked with some wonderful people that have done some of the most kindest acts imginable. One example, and I wont mention any names is when a fellow brother, offered his apartment to a woman and her children who arrived here from another country. She had the unfortunate luck of either losing her purse or being robbed. This woman and children stayed in his apartment for a few days until everything was sorted out. She couldnt even speak English and he couldnt speak hers but regardless of color, religion or any thing else he did a very special thing. I hold this person, my fellow brother with high regards and respect. No media coverage was ever aired. This is just one of numerous incidents that go on while some folks curse and spit and throw objects from high places. Stab and or shot at us. We bleed and hurt too. We are called to bad situations. Domestic/abusive situations, when a person dies, vehicle accidents, assaults, burglaries, and robberies. We are the peace keepers, the citizen soldier who took the oath to serve and protect. So, remember this as you sit in your homes questioning every move the officer makes, when he or she has only a fraction of a second to respond.
