Ive posted about this before, but it seems I can always learn a little bit more... When I was a kid (early 70s), I took guitar lessons from a crotchety old dude in KC North named Deb Dyer. He was a rough teacher, but I always got the sense, in the basement studio of his home, that he once had a career of some sort in music (lots of stills, souvenirs - I knew he had to have been SOMEBODY). He also gave me a novelty 45 that hed put out - I Hate to Take My Wife To The Grocery Store b/w Hospital Quiet. For such a grouch, I thought the record was hilarious - my sister and I used to listen to it over and over. He died in 73, but later, as I got into old music, his unknown musical provenance nagged at me. Once the internet kicked in, I had my answer - in spades! Deb started off as the staff announcer for the Brush Creek Follies - KCs answer to The Grand Ole Opry. He went on to cut records (religious and novelty) for KC labels like Damon and Red Barn, wrote books (Satans Secret Service!) and had kind of a hit with a pop song called Rendezvous With A Rose. Now I learn, though The Hillbilly Researcher, that Deb probably was part owner of the Red Barn label! Most of you country collectors have seen the great design of this label (usually an Elmo Linn record - was he kin to The Musical Linn Twins??!?). Anyway, its funny how lines often connect, aint it? And now, because it never, ever gets old, is I Hate To Take My Wife to The Grocery Store
