Johnny Hendricks improved upon his ground game, worked well off the fence, but didnt do enough to top Ruthless Robbie Lawler in their Welterweight rematch. Lawler landed the more telling an effective strikes. Late in round five, he perhaps stole the fight with a barrage of punches that put Hendricks on shaky legs. Still, he was far less consistent than Hendricks, who controlled large sequences of the bout with his strong grappling game. That did, however, become stagnant at times -- pushing the crowd to jeers and pressing referee Herb Dean to break the pair. For that reason, perhaps, the judges awarded the split decision to Lawler. He is now the UFC Welterweight champion. Who wants to make it a trilogy? In the co-feature, Gilbert Melendezs early offense and courage didnt culminate in a Lightweight title win. The UFC champ, Pettis, stood back and picked his spots. He took some punches off the fence but was seldom in true danger. Pettis was on the fence, after all, when he clamped on Melendezs neck, forced him to the floor, and locked in a guillotine off his back with plenty of time to spare. The finish came like so -- in round two -- and Pettis retains his title returning from injury.
