Just have to share this story. The man here is Paul Leonard a very dear friend and colleague and one of my heros. Paul is an Accountant and Feldenkrais Practitioner from Melbourne. (Originally from Coffs Harbour.) with his Mum Marlene Leonard and his two children Harry and Isobel were here too but not in this photo. I first met Paul in the early nineties as a patient. He was still seeking rehabilitation for incomplete quadraplegia and deformities from burns in his left hand (from childhood) He had been discharged from Sydney Spinal Unit Physios saying there could be nothing more done for him. Paul never gave up. He could barely walk when he first consulted me using crutches and wore an orthotic splint on his leg. after his first Feldenkrais Lesson he knew that was exactly what he needed. He believed, had determination and hope that he could learn to move well again. Feldenkrais made sense. There were many more lessons over many years as well and then Paul enrolled in the Feldenkrais Practitioner Training program in Brisbane Australia on my recommendation and reference. He was walking beautifully without crutches or splints and worked for me at my very busy Health and Fitness Education Centre in Coffs Harbour for 4 years or so teaching ATM, then when he graduated he continued working for me doing FIs as well. Paul has the best FI hands I know. Paul got married had two children and moved to Melbourne and studied Accountancy. Sitting in a chair so long was not good for him and then he broke his ankle severely which would not unite for 12 mths. Paul also suffers spasms and severe nerve pain from his spinal cord injury. He has become primarily wheelchair bound again, more and more over past six years. He came back to Coffs for a visit to his parents and me and I worked on him again yesterday. A big man, me with a healing broken knee, knelt on the Feldenkrais table while working with him in supine, lifting his legs etc. I make the lesson my own too. He stood up and walked as close to normal for 3 steps after the lesson. I know how much potential this amazing hero of mine has, all I did was open a window to remind him of his own potential while re-discovering my own.
