Lucas deserves his chance to rekindle Liverpool FC career It was like the old days in Sofia’s Vasil Levski Stadium on Wednesday night. There was Lucas Leiva operating as a shield in front of Liverpool FC’s back four, while Steven Gerrard was freed up to be a creative force further forward. It was hardly a vintage European display against Ludogorets but in difficult circumstance that tactical switch by Brendan Rodgers paid off. When the Reds boss decided to reinvent Gerrard as a holding midfielder midway through last season it was Lucas who paid the price. With only one deep-lying playmaker in Rodgers’ preferred system, the Brazilian was relegated to bench duty. From then until May it worked a treat. Gerrard flourished in that quarter-back role with his range of passing ideally suited to picking out the runs of Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge. When Liverpool operated with a midfield diamond, the captain had an in-form Jordan Henderson and Joe Allen working tirelessly either side of him and giving Gerrard the platform to play. But this season things have changed. Gerrard, who has often been man-marked, hasn’t had those willing runners in the forward positions to hit.
