MacGillycuddys Reeks Winter Conditions report Updated at 10:00 on Fri 23/01/15 (Note : This is only a rough visual observation from 100mtrs and conditions may vary in sheltered valleys, coums, and gullys) Overnight Westerly winds with early morning rain have had an noticeable negative effect on the snow cover in the Reeks and surrounding mountain areas. Snow line has now retreated above 850mtrs and now only patchy below this on open slopes. Current temp is 10 degrees at 100mtrs with moderate Westerly breeze and intermittent drizzle. Forecast : Cloudy today with outbreaks of rain developing this morning but the rain will clear soon after dark. Fresh, southwest winds will veer west and become gustier for a time with the clearance. Highest temperatures 9 to 11 degrees Celsius but becoming colder later today. Tonight: Dry tonight with clear spells and moderate to fresh, westerly breezes. Lowest temperatures +1 to -2 degrees Celsius with sharp ground frost setting in and icy patches forming on any untreated surfaces. Tomorrow: Saturday will be dry with sunny spells, although it will stay rather cold. Highest temperatures only 6 to 8 degrees Celsius. Winds backing southwesterly and decreasing light to moderate later. ***BE WARNED!!! The recent rise in temps will now increase the risk of slab avalanche and snow pack slides on all gullys and slopes over 30 degrees. Danger also of cornice collapse. See photo attached taken yesterday of large break in the snow slope at the bottom of the Lick highlighting the instability of the snow pack.
