Many of my facebook friends will know that I have mede several trips to the Ukraine and have made many friends in the Donetsk Region where we have a Christian Familly Center. I have watched with great concern the events of the past months and have had sporatic communication with my friends there. Contrary to what you may see on the news reports, here is a recent letter my the minister of the Family Center speaking about the situation there. Pray for my friends and all the peoples of the Ukraine. Thank you. Let me share about some events that took place in our church, as well as about situation in Ukraine. 1. First, I would like to describe the situation in Donetsk on September 1. Unfortunately, the war is going on. Last week Russian army invaded Ukraine. President Putin is helping terrorists this way. We can see Russian soldiers in Donetsk streets. Most of them are from the Caucasus. The Ukrainian army suffered a defeat at Ilovaisk city (50 km from Donetsk) because Putin sent a big military reinforcement for terrorists. The situation in our city can be described this way: almost everything has been destroyed. 1) Terrorists destroyed our bank system. All the banks are not working, some of them has been robbed. People are not getting their pensions, reliefs, and salaries. The only bank working is “Oshchad Bank”, but you can see huge lines of people (100 - 120 people) at the bank every day. Praise the Lord my bank is working in another city. 2) Educational system is destroyed. Our children didn’t go to schools and colleges this school year. 3) Our police, SMVI (State Motor Vehicle Inspectorate), OPP (Office of Public Prosecutor), law-courts, notary officers, etc. do not work as well. 4) Terrorists destroyed our business, and many people lost their jobs. The terrorists destroyed all the business of the richest person in Ukraine – Renat Akhmentov. As the result of their military actions, 50% of Donbas mines have stopped to work. Many factories do not work now as well. The terrorists bombed Akhmetov’s famous stadium “Donbass Arena” with their mortars. They destroyed the training center of Akhmetov’s soccer team “Shakhtyor” (“Coal miner”). They do not allow businessmen to run their business. First, they stopped the process of supplying things, so businessmen cannot bring things needed for sales. Secondly, terrorists often kidnap businessmen. The soldiers of DNR (Donetsk National Republic) drive businessmen outside of the city, threaten and torture them. They say something like that: if you want to live, you must pay to us. For this reason, all businessmen, who was able to leave Donetsk earlier, have already done that. Many food stores are closed. Only three big stores are still working: ASHAN, Karavan and Brusnichka. There is no gas in gas stations, except of Parralel gas station. 5) Terrorists are destroying the infrastructure of the city. Two days ago, they bombed Donetsk train station and the square near it. They also burned another train station - Yasinovataya. Now, if somebody wants to leave the city, he needs to go to the towns, which are not occupied by terrorists. These cities are Mariupol, Konstantinovka, and Druzhkovka. Yesterday they exploded Donetsk oil-processing factory. They fired at some schools and burned them. They also fired at The Youth Center (which is in Kalininskiy district three - four kilometers from our church) and burned it. Every day we can hear about terrible things they are doing. They would not go to sleep until they made sure they have done another evil thing during the day. 6) Each day, the terrorists fire a new district of our city. Ten days ago, they shelled the area where our church is located. They even occupied the campus of Donetsk Christian University and fired from that place using their mortars. Some buildings were damaged in our region. A shell hit a house in a nearby street. Two pieces of shells hit the building of our church and broke two windows. Praise God that He has kept our building safe. It could have been destroyed completely, but by His mercy only two windows were broken. 7) Most people left the city, so our streets almost are deserted. Now you will not see many people in the streets, and only a few cars there. Only the terrorists drive the cars, which they have taken away from people. 8) Almost every day people disappear. When we watch the news, they often announce a new person who disappeared that day. The relatives ask to help find these people, but it is very difficult to do it now. My family and I are staying with our church and our people. Unfortunately, four churches have been closed in Donetsk. We continue serving people in three areas. We are trying to meet their spiritual, family and physical needs. 2. During each week, we serve lunches for the poor. Every time more and more people come to eat lunches. These are parents with many children, the disabled and many other people. Before each meal, we talk to them about the Bible and give a chance to accept Jesus in their hearts. We buy food to meet their physical needs: pasta, buckwheat, rice, vegetable oil, sugar, tea, cookies, etc. Since many of them ask us if they can take this food home in order to feed the other people who attend our church, we decided we could serve them that way. In August, as the result of this service, four people came to know God. These were three men and one woman. 3. Serving the blind people. The Director of the Blind People Center called me and asked if we were able to help them with supplying food. As you know, our pensioners and disabled people do not get their pensions and reliefs due to the fact, that our bank system is broken, and people live with no money. We arranged a meeting at a certain day. Before coming to them, we purchased some food. The Director invited blind people to come for a meeting. Ten people from our church came that day to serve them by sharing the Word of God, singing and giving testimonies. The service was devoted to the main theme, The Heaven. At the end of our church service for them we prayed that all the blind people would accept Jesus and be taken to heaven when the time comes. We met there one young man. He came to the meeting to listen to God’s Word. He was very angry at God for allowing this war to start. He shared with us that he strongly believed that by his prayers the souls of the killed soldiers can be taken from hell to heaven. We had a long discussion with him. At the end, he finally agreed with what the Word of God says about this issue. We invited blind people to attend our church. We also suggested if they would come and eat our free lunches. Some of them agreed to come. Each Sunday, from five to seven blind people come to our church service. Some of them have accepted Jesus in their hearts. So, dear brother! We are in need. We preach the Gospel by good works. Many people are open to listen the word of God in war situation. Please, pray for us.
