Many things have happened in Buganda and are steal happening, a week back a read a post by someone on this forum who put it that Tamale Mirundi’s departure from state house will be good news to Buganda, this line of thought made me to ask myself whether Mirundi is a threat to Buganda and if so who bought him to betray his own people. Worldwide people have always betrayed others Jesus Christ was betrayed by one of the 12 disciples. Sadam Hussein was betrayed by his own relative and so Tamale mirundi to his own kins men it’s not a secret. Tamale Mirundi was tempted by money and scholarships as he put it and he is not the first to betray us I remember a person by names of sebirumbi who decided to sell his soul to the devil and dined with its angels in luwero. Sebirumbi was rewarded by giving him monopoly of selling refreshments and snacks at Nakivubo whenever there was a match under Apollo Milton obote with a few more favors in order to please his master he decided to fulfill what his boss thought of baganda i.e “a good muganda is a dead one” Many people ended up losing their lives in abide by sebirumbi to make the baganda of luwero to become good in face of Obote. It’s therefore no surprise that museveni like his teacher Milton obote sees baganda as the biggest threat to his rule. The revelation by Tamale Mirundi reminded me of once the mighty people who were humbled by fate. In 2005 when Milton obote died a dog was installed as a heir to obote this sent chills all over the world however installing a dog and other events that were done was not a message to the obote’s, the museveni’s and other dictators who may rise after them it was a message that was sent to the baganda. In order to understand it well it’s important to discuss why we had to install a dog as a heir to obote visa vis our deep conservative culture regarding the Dead and what it meant to the only rulers we know at mengo. In trying to understand why the Baganda could install a dog as Obotes heir, someone may have missed the most important point about Kiganda culture. Kiganda culture being so old and sophisticated has proverbs and accepted norms for every situation. Our proverbs are taught to young children so that they can understand how to behave as Baganda, and that the most underlying thing about our culture is mutual respect. When Obote disrespected not only the Kabaka of Buganda, but also the baganda , he forfeited his right to being respected by us, so we had to do something to show our disrespect to him. Both museveni and Obote supporters had anticipated that we were going to do several things to dis Obote, and as soon as Obote died, obote sympathizers like Nsaba buturo, Nabudere and Omara etc became Baganda cultural policemen and started lecturing us on how our culture does not allow us to celebrate the death of an enemy. They hoped that they would appeal to the hitherto good manners’ of the Baganda, so that M7 can give his hero Obote a state funeral to serve his political ends. The Baganda in our canniness used our very rich Kiganda culture to find the perfect simple medium to impart a very powerful message all over the world. Kiganda norm is that when someone dies in the village, nobody should work on his/ her farm on the day of the burial in respect to the dead person. As all these non-Baganda cultural police were probably unaware, there is an addendum to this norm, which is that if the dead person is/was your enemy, in our culture you hide behind an open door and dig all around it. You do this to disobey the no-digging rule, by digging a small patch around your door to celebrate your enemys death. That is why we have a saying Lwoliffa wakili ndirima mu luggi. There is also a not-often used Kiganda proverb which says nti Obuwangaazi bumekessa emesse ku ddiba lya kappa”. This means is that if a rat grows old enough and outlives its mighty enemy the cat, a day comes when the rat is able to bite/gnaw the dead cats skin. The public celebration of Obotes death, the flogging of his corpse through the streets of Ndeeba and Wankulukuku , ending with a dog succeeding him was indeed a declaration of a new Buganda. The public sweeping of Bulange and Lubiri on the very day of Obotes funeral is again an example of okulima mu luggi , using a very strong Buganda norm to celebrate the death of an enemy. Such actions are however a merger of what people outside Buganda calls the pragmatic and old Buganda tendencies. The group at Wankulukuku included those whom they thought that we are nolonger concerned with old Buganda and the real supporters of old Buganda who Hated Obote with a passion this is the group of baganda who witnessed the evil and demonic attack on Buganda by a savage from AKOKORO, This combination is the new Buganda. The new Buganda who have had enough of the shackles of good manners arising out of a culture which other non baganda use either as bargaining tool or as our weakness. That is why we had to wait for a moment when everyone was looking to throw away these shackles publicly, which every luo found surprising. We the Buganda were signaling to the Obotess, and M7 that we will not be held by misused cultural norms into being bullied, that they should not celebrate the death of their enemies, as M7 and Obote supporters were trying to do. The new Buganda is also telling our titular government by the will of God Mengo that we will not allow Mengo to use the Buganda culture as submission to dictatorship, or use it as a currency to cut deals which do not benefit the Baganda. Despite shock, of the Luo’s the target audience for the Wankulukuku event was not them but rather the Baganda at large. Because these were the very deep but subtle messages which maybe only the Baganda could fully understand. The Baganda both within and without uganda in the diaspora understood the very powerful message which was sent to them by the very simple act of clothing a dog into a backcloth and giving it a spear and a knife. We all understood the meaning of flogging Obotes corpse, and most importantly we all understood the sweeping of Bulange and Lubiri while Obote was being buried. This message was by the baganda and not our cultural head , It is also very interesting to note that Mengo - who are the official custodians of our culture, could not send even one official to attend or support any of these events. Obotes funeral was god sent to the masses in Buganda. It was to show that we the youth in the new Buganda have been empowered and liberated from the shackles of our old culture which have been used to suppress and subjugate the Baganda up to now. By various regimes therefore the future of Buganda is in our hands. New Buganda is not interested in teaching or claiming to teach any non-muganda manners anymore. New Buganda does not care what our neighbor thinks of us, we are fully aware of whom our enemies are, and we are fully aware how we can use our culture to ensure our survival. Once we the new Baganda are no longer held back by our old cultural good manners or compliance, we will go all out to grab what we can in the free-for-all named Uganda our education, wealth, strong culture and norms will of course give us better game plans and we will end up the winners. This is what the majority of long suffering Baganda continued wishing for, and Obotes death finally granted. Conversely, our blow to Obote was not to Old Buganda, but to his old Uganda, for who will forget the man who was succeeded by a dog, and why. Many baganda continue to grief for their lost business through un explained fire outbreaks, we continue to see people whom we entrusted with our mandate to represent us in parliament being bought with peanuts to sit on the aspiration of Buganda, we continue to witness people being evicted by people in authority hiding behind the curtains while fronting compromised baganda to do what the Sebirumbi’s did during the obote era and now we have the tamale mirundi, Jennifer musisi and many others who are yet to come. I therefore encourage every youth in Buganda to take a risk and try to establish himself so that we may liberate our selves economically, once this is done we shall realize that no one will ever stand in our way to agitate for a just and peaceful Buganda where every muganda has equall opportunities like those in Uganda government. We should never stay still or else shall as well be tempted to sell our souls to the devil. My dream is to see a self reliant Buganda kingdom that can provide for her people’s needs and desires socially, economically and politically. The mighty lord is by our side as we shall all wait to see The new Buganda that is the mind of our Kabaka and his Katikiro. Awangale ayi sebuufu bwango, lukomwa nantawentwa Sabasajja Kabaka wa Buganda. Katonda ne Buganda omwoyo gumu, emmeeme emu ,no mutima gumu era ogwo gwe mutima gwa Buganda oggutaafa.
