My wife and I recently travelled to Darwin Australia and stayed at the travel lodge Mirambeena resort, ok hotel in the middle of town. Now when staying in a hotel they offer these small safes most of which can be opened with a good hard knock at the top of the key pad whilst turning the knob, (google how to open a safe with a potato for more info ) I still use the safe and recommend you do as I figure they (hotel cleaners, mini bar service or technicians) would still risk their job by trying to open it and if Jo-Bad Guy strolls in whilst the cleaners leave the door ajar it leaves them nothing in plane view to take. So they do work to a certain degree as long as the key for the over ride lock doesnt fall into the wrong hands. But there is only so much you can fit in the safe. My wife left her hand bag on the chair as you do but with nothing in it but her make up and other female things but somebody went through her hand bag and stole a full bottle of perfume I had just bought her for our anniversary. Now management didnt seem surprised and said they would write up a report which took four days to write up and they would launch an investigation, conveniently it would happen after we were gone. Small things are often taken in break inns because there not noticed and reported to little to late And you can easily think to your self hmmm did I forget it somewhere or did I not bring it with, have I misplaced it? In this circumstance my wife used her perfume in the morning removing it only to spray herself then put it back and then when we got ready for dinner went to use it again and it was gone the only people to enter the room after we left was the mini bar person and the cleaner. This is a no brainer for me the purse was covered on the chair so that would rule out a walk in thief leaving it to be one of the two staff. Proving things is difficult enough with evidence these days never mind with out. So the lesson here is be mindful of your things not just at home but when staying abroad as well. Even if you are staying in a western country Specially at that hotel.
