Nicole Harrington Reinard, you can pick up strings at any music store and change them with the assistance of a video... I use DR strings exclusively, theyre handmade, stay in tune longer and break less. I have never used a string winder, as seen in this video. You can just turn the tuners manually. You could probably use a whole new set if theyre old. Never take off all the strings at once. The neck should always have tension on it (tight strings) to prevent it from bending the wrong way. Give DJ the video and a little assistance and encouragement. Get him a tuner if you can, even though theres 100 tuner apps., he might need to tune up when Moms iphone is inaccessable. Tuners are about $20, strings about $10. Be sure you put the strings on the same way as the others are already on, you will see which way they are wound around the tuners already. Leave yourself some slack on the string at first. You will want at least a few winds around the tuners to keep proper tension. Let me know if you hit a roadblock. Good Luck!!!
