Obedience to authority Dr. Stanley Milgrams experiment is a well renowned research social psychology experiment. In Milgrams classic experiment subjects would arrive at Yale University and believing that he or she were a part of an experiment on the effects in regards effects of punishment on learning. The subjects were seated in front of a shock generator with an electrode that was attached to the wrist. The subject was instructed to give an electric shock to Mr. Wallace if Mr Wallace gave a wrong answer. The experimenter declared that the shocks could be extremely painful. The shock generator had 30 switches clearly marked sequentially from 15 to 450 volts. There were also labels on the switches ranging from Slight shock to Danger: severe shock. In addition two additional switches that read XXX. The subject was instructed to give a shock after every incorrect response. Furthermore, after each wrong answer the shocks were to be intensified by 15 volts. Prior to the subject received a test shock of 45 volts, in order to get an idea of what Mr. Wallace (A part of the experiments team) could endure. This was the only real shock given in the entire experiment but the subjects participating had no knowledge of the fact.Mr Wallace gave wrong answers in a predetermined sequence. Every wrong and incorrect answer Mr. Wallace gave, he received an increased 15 volt shock. Upon receiving the 150 volt shock Mr. Wallace asked to be free from the experiment.Upon receiving 180 volts he cried that he could no longer take the pain. At a 250 volt level Mr. Wallace was screaming in agony. When Mr. Wallace endured a 300 volt shock pounded on the wall saying he had a heart condition and insisted he be freed. At 330 volts Mr. Wallace fell silent. If at any point a subject started to be reluctant the experimenter would use four cues to keep on going. (1) Please continue. (2) The experiment requires that you continue. ((3) Its absolutely essential that you continue. and (4) You have no other choice, you must go on. Each of the 40 subjects administered at least 300 volts.
