Often, Ive talked about how itd be nice to be treated like a vehicle when Im commuting on my bike, which is every day. I will take my turn at 4 way stops... please dont interrupt proper traffic flow to wave me through because Im on a bicycle. BUT. To be treated like a vehicle, one must follow the rules of the road like a vehicle... and due to the easy nature of getting smushed on bike by a larger vehicle, we have to do it even better. It was a momentary lapse on my part last night that found me pulled over by the RCMP for blowing a stop sign on Kootenay Street. And rightfully so. If nothing else, the short blast of the siren put a quick end to my foolish interest in maintaining momentum instead of maintaining the rules of the road. What occurred next... instead of the issuing of the 160 dollar fine... was a very fair and CARING and obvious pointing out of the dangers of blowing a stop sign on a bicycle... which Id say was a lot more effective than the ticket could have ever been. And its true, to be treated like a vehicle on the road, we must behave like vehicles. And like our larger 4 wheeled road companions, we must accept the results of our choosing to not follow those rules.... which is the ownership of the responsibility of anything that transpires because of our actions... even if we get ourselves hurt. Be safe out there friends.
