On December 7, 1941 my dad was living in the Southeast corner of Nebraska, the son of a farmer /entrepreneur. When news of the Pearl Harbor attack came, he and a buddy hopped a freight train enroute to Great Lakes, Michigan. They made it in two days and both signed up in service to their country in the Navy. After boot camp they were sent to the Pacific fleet, Dad assigned to a destroyer. After about 6 months they were hit by a Kamikaze plane which nearly took them out from the massive damages they sustained. Dad was hit with shrapnel and was awarded with his first Purple Heart medal. Sunsequently he was on a carrier on a gun emplacement where he was hit by another bit of plane debris by yet another Kamikaze winning him another Purple Heart. He was utelized on numerous warships until VJ Day when he was assigned to a minesweeper where he was associated with mine warfare until he retired from the service in December of 1963 after 23 years in the Navy as a E9 Master Chief Mineman . He got a job (after working for the Post Office and several others) at the National School District as a custodian and ending as a gounds/maintenance person. He passed away in March of 1980......I have missed him every day since then. He was a good man, one of my very best friends. I have always been very proud of my father for seeing his duty to his country. ....and doing it to the best of his ability.
